Magnetic heat pumps and refrigerators
Magnetic heat pumps and refrigerators are potential replacements for vapor-compression devices that use chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants. Several near-room-temperature designs with low-temperature superconducting magnets have reached the experimental-device stage. High-temperature superconducting materials should significantly enhance existing design concepts and may enable new design approaches such as those involving field switching of superconducting magnets to accomplish the thermodynamic cycle.
